UNDERSTANDING WHOLE VEHICLE TYPE APPROVAL (WVTA) AND ITS IMPACT ON CONVERTED LCVs

What is Whole Vehicle Type Approval (WVTA)?

Whole Vehicle Type Approval (WVTA) is a certification process that ensures a vehicle meets specific safety, environmental, and performance standards. It’s essentially a “passport” allowing a vehicle to be legally driven on public roads within the European Economic Area (EEA).

European Whole Vehicle Type Approval (EU WVTA)

EU WVTA was the specific framework for vehicles manufactured and sold within the European Union. It provided a harmonised set of regulations across member states, simplifying the process of bringing vehicles to market.

The UK’s Departure from EU WVTA

Following the UK’s departure from the European Union, the EU WVTA system no longer applies. The UK has introduced its own UK Vehicle Type Approval (UK VTA) system.

How does this affect Converted LCVs like the Trucksmith LoLoader?

Converted LCVs, such as those modified for specific purposes (e.g., low floored lutons, dropsides, tippers), are significantly impacted by these changes:

  • Compliance: Converted LCVs must now comply with the UK VTA regulations. This may involve modifications to the original vehicle design and construction to meet the new safety and environmental standards.
  • Testing: Vehicles will need to undergo rigorous testing to demonstrate compliance with UK VTA requirements. This may include tests for emissions, safety features (such as brakes and lights), and structural integrity.
  • Documentation: Comprehensive documentation is crucial. This includes records of the original vehicle specifications, details of all modifications made, and test results.
  • Implications for Businesses: These changes have implications for bodybuilding businesses that convert LCVs. They may need to invest in updated equipment, training, and quality control processes to ensure compliance with the new regulations.

Trucksmith and UK VTA

At Trucksmith, we understand the importance of navigating the complex world of UK VTA. We can assist you with:

  • All of the Trucksmith LoLoader, Tipper and Dropside standard ranges comply with UK WVTA
  • Assessing the impact of UK VTA on your specific conversion project.
  • Guiding you through the necessary modifications and testing procedures.
  • Ensuring your converted LCV meets all the required safety and compliance standards.
  • Preparing the necessary documentation for UK VTA approval.

Conclusion

The transition to the UK VTA system presents both challenges and opportunities for the LCV conversion industry. By staying informed and working with experienced partners like Trucksmith, you can ensure your converted vehicles are safe, legal, and ready for the road.

UNDERSTANDING LCV PAYLOAD: A GUIDE FOR VAN OPERATORS

What is Payload?

Payload refers to the total weight a Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) can safely carry. It’s calculated by subtracting the curb weight (the vehicle’s weight without any load) from the Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW). The GVW is the maximum allowable weight of the vehicle when fully loaded, including passengers, cargo, and fuel.

Why Payload Matters

Exceeding the payload limit can have serious consequences:

  • Safety Hazards: Overloading can compromise braking, steering, and overall vehicle stability, increasing the risk of accidents.
  • Legal Issues: Operating an overloaded vehicle can lead to fines and even vehicle seizure.
  • Vehicle Damage: Excessive weight can cause premature wear and tear on tires, suspension, and other components.
  • Warranty Issues: Overloading may void your vehicle’s warranty.

Factors Affecting Payload

Several factors influence an LCV’s payload capacity:

  • Vehicle Model and Size: Larger vehicles generally have higher payload capacities.
  • Engine and Transmission: More powerful engines and transmissions can typically handle heavier loads.
  • Body Type: The type of body (e.g., van, pickup truck, low floored luton) significantly impacts payload.
  • Modifications: Aftermarket additions like tail lifts, roof racks, ladders, and heavy-duty bumpers can reduce payload.

Bodybuilder Variations and Unattainable Measurements

When it comes to converted LCVs like the Trucksmith LoLoader, payload calculations can become more complex. Bodybuilders, companies that modify vehicles for specific purposes, often use their own measurements and calculations. This can lead to variations in reported payload figures.

Here’s why variations can occur:

  • Different Conversion Methods: Bodybuilders use various materials and techniques, which can affect the final weight of the conversion.
  • Unattainable Measurements: Unlike Trucksmith, some bodybuilders may use idealised or unattainable measurements in their calculations, leading to inflated payload figures. For example, they might not account for the weight of:
    • Real-world equipment: Tools, spare parts, personal belongings, etc.
    • Fuel: A full tank of fuel can add significant weight.
    • Passengers: The weight of the driver and any passengers.
  • Lack of Standardisation: Unfortunately, there’s no universal standard for calculating payload in converted LCVs.

Tips for Determining Accurate Payload

  • Consult the Vehicle Manufacturer: Refer to the owner’s manual for the base vehicle’s payload capacity.
  • Work with Reputable Bodybuilders: Choose a bodybuilder like Trucksmith with a strong reputation and transparent practices.
  • Inquire About Their Calculation Methods: Ask how they determine payload and what assumptions they make.
  • Consider a Weight Check: After the conversion, have your vehicle weighed at a certified weighbridge to get an accurate reading.

Conclusion

Understanding payload is crucial for safe and responsible LCV operation. By being aware of the factors that influence payload and working with reputable bodybuilders, you can ensure your converted vehicle is safe, legal, and operates within its limits.

WHY BODYBUILDER GUIDELINES MATTER TO YOUR LOLOADER

Trucksmith team member Tylor seals up a wheelbox in a LoLoader

So, you’re dreaming of hitting the open road in your own low floored luton van. Exciting! But before you dive headfirst into that dream, it’s crucial to understand the importance of bodybuilder guidelines.

What are Bodybuilder Guidelines?

Put simply, bodybuilder guidelines are a set of rules and regulations established by the vehicle manufacturer (like Renault, Citroen, Ford, Mercedes-Benz, etc.) for companies that modify their vehicles. These guidelines cover a wide range of aspects, including:

  • Structural integrity: Ensuring any modifications don’t compromise the vehicle’s safety and structural soundness.
  • Electrical systems: Maintaining the integrity and safety of the vehicle’s electrical systems.
  • Weight distribution: Preventing overloading and ensuring safe handling.
  • Emissions: Complying with environmental regulations.

Why are they important for my van conversion?

  • Safety First: By adhering to bodybuilder guidelines, you prioritise your safety and the safety of others on the road.
  • Legal Compliance: Following these guidelines helps ensure your converted van is legally compliant with roadworthiness standards.
  • Warranty Considerations: Many vehicle warranties may be voided if modifications are not carried out in accordance with the manufacturer’s guidelines.
  • Peace of Mind: Knowing your conversion has been done correctly provides peace of mind and confidence in your vehicle.

How do bodybuilder guidelines impact Trucksmith?

At Trucksmith, we take bodybuilder guidelines very seriously. We are committed to:

  • Thorough research: We meticulously study the manufacturer’s guidelines for each vehicle model we work on.
  • Expert craftsmanship: Our skilled team of converters ensures all modifications are carried out to the highest standards and in strict adherence to the guidelines.

FROM TALC TO HANNOVER: TOBY’S IMPACT ON TRUCKSMITH’S DESIGNS

Most commercial vehicle converters simply adapt existing designs. At Trucksmith, we innovate. Our extensive R&D department is the driving force behind our industry-leading designs, including the original Trucksmith LoLoader. This commitment to research and development means you get vehicles that are not just different but demonstrably better.

Toby is a Junior Design Engineer at Trucksmith.  Since joining Trucksmith 18 months ago, Toby has become an integral part of our Quality and Product Design team. His dedication to excellence and proactive approach have led to tangible improvements across our product range. This dedication was further recognised with a trip to the prestigious IAA TRANSPORTATION show in Hannover, accompanying the senior management team.

MEET TOBY!

What does a typical day/week look like for you as a Junior Design Engineer?

No two weeks are the same, I am fortunate to have some key tasks like using SolidWorks to implement continuous improvement on the workshop floor; the department has a lot of scope and I enjoy a varied role.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of your role?

The variety of problems we get to deal with on the workshop floor is actually a huge driver for continuous improvement. Each new challenge, whether it’s a unique vehicle modification, a complex repair, or a process bottleneck, presents a learning opportunity. By analysing these problems, identifying root causes and implementing solutions, we constantly refine our processes and improve our efficiency. We’re not just designing and building vehicles; we’re constantly learning and improving how we work.

What skills are most important for success in your role?

Attention to detail is absolutely crucial in this role. Even small errors in design or execution can have significant consequences in a vehicle conversion. We’re dealing with precise measurements, complex systems, and strict safety regulations. A keen eye for detail ensures accuracy in everything from initial designs and calculations to final assembly and quality checks. This prevents costly mistakes, ensures the safety and reliability of our vehicles, and ultimately delivers a better product to our customers.

What are you learning in this role?

I’m gaining valuable experience in process engineering, which involves analysing and optimising our workshop workflows and manufacturing processes. This includes learning about lean manufacturing principles, identifying bottlenecks, and implementing changes to improve efficiency, reduce waste and enhance quality. I’m learning how to document processes, create flowcharts, and use data to measure the effectiveness of improvements

What are your short-term and long-term career goals within design engineering/the company?

In the short term, my goal is to solidify my skills and become a highly proficient and reliable member of the engineering team. I want to contribute to building a strong and stable team environment where we can effectively collaborate and share knowledge. I’m also eager to expand my experience with different design solutions and contribute to increasing our capacity for innovation. Long term, I see myself taking on more responsibility within the team, perhaps specialising in a particular area of design and playing a key role in developing cutting-edge solutions for Trucksmith

What’s a recent accomplishment you’re proud of?

I recently faced a challenge when trying to scan a vehicle bulkhead. The glossy surface was causing significant reflection, making it impossible to get a clean scan. The standard solution would have been to use a specialised anti-glare spray, which costs over £30 a can. However, I decided to explore alternative solutions. I remembered that talc powder can sometimes reduce shine, so I picked up a £3 tub from a local shop. It worked perfectly! I was able to get a high-quality scan without the expensive spray, saving the company money and demonstrating a bit of resourcefulness.

What sparked your interest in design engineering?

I’ve always been fascinated by product design. Even as a kid, I was taking things apart to see how they worked and trying to build my own creations. That interest led me to pursue design and technology at GCSE level and then onto a degree in product design. It’s not just something I do at work, either; in my free time, I enjoy more artistic pursuits like, which I think complements my technical design skills.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

Outside of work, I’m pretty active. I love playing various sports, but snowboarding is definitely a passion of mine – there’s nothing like carving down a mountain! I also train in Muay Thai, which is a great way to stay fit and focused. It’s challenging but incredibly rewarding. And even in my free time, I find myself drawn to design. I enjoy working on personal projects with 3D printing and rendering models – it’s a great way to explore new ideas and keep my creative juices flowing.

What’s a fun fact about yourself that most people don’t know?

I share the same birthday as my dad, Martin. It’s quite a coincidence – I was actually born on his 30th birthday, so I guess you could say I was his big 3-0 present!

If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?

If I could have any superpower, it would definitely be super intelligence. Not just knowing a lot of facts, but the ability to process information incredibly quickly, see connections others might miss, and come up with innovative solutions to complex problems. I think it would be fascinating to be able to tackle engineering challenges with that level of cognitive power, designing more efficient vehicles, developing sustainable technologies, and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.

Toby’s dedication to problem-solving, his resourcefulness, and his passion for design engineering make him a valuable asset to the Trucksmith team. His contributions, from workshop floor improvements to international industry exposure, embody our commitment to innovation and continuous development. We’re excited to see what he accomplishes in the future and how he continues to contribute to Trucksmith’s success in the commercial vehicle market.

TRUCKSMITH STANDS UP TO CANCER: A STORY OF STRENGTH AND SUPPORT

At Trucksmith, we’re more than just a team; we’re a family. And like any family, we support each other through thick and thin. That’s why we’re incredibly proud to share a story of resilience, determination, and the power of giving back.

In 2023, our Director, Emma, received a breast cancer diagnosis. This news understandably had a profound impact on everyone at Trucksmith. However, Emma faced her diagnosis with incredible strength and positivity. Following three surgeries and further treatment, we’re delighted to share that she has made a good recovery.

Inspired by her own experience and wanting to give back to the community that supported her, Emma set herself a challenge for April 2024: to walk five miles every single day with her loyal canine companion. Her goal? To raise vital funds for Stand Up To Cancer, a joint national fundraising campaign from Cancer Research UK and Channel 4, which funds vital research into new cancer treatments and tests.

Emma’s dedication was truly inspiring. Rain or shine, she laced up her walking boots and hit the pavement with her four-legged friend by her side. Her commitment not only showcased her personal strength but also rallied the entire Trucksmith team behind her.

And we didn’t just cheer from the sidelines. Recognizing the importance of Emma’s efforts and the incredible work of Stand Up To Cancer, Trucksmith pledged to match every pound she raised.

Thanks to Emma’s incredible effort and the generosity of her supporters, she raised an astounding £3,000! And with Trucksmith’s matching contribution, a total of £6,000 was donated to Stand Up To Cancer.

This significant donation will directly contribute to funding life-saving research, bringing us closer to a world where everyone survives cancer.

We’re immensely proud of Emma’s courage and determination. Her story is a powerful reminder of the importance of supporting one another and the positive impact we can have when we come together.

At Trucksmith, we believe in supporting our community and making a difference. Emma’s fundraising efforts perfectly embody this value, and we’re honoured to have been a part of her journey.

THE IMPACT OF MISINFORMATION ON THE UK VAN AND LCV MARKET

The UK’s van and light commercial vehicle (LCV) market is vital to the economy, supporting diverse sectors. However, misinformation and disinformation pose a growing threat, impacting consumer behavior, regulations, and market dynamics. This article explores these effects, examining the sources, consequences, and potential solutions.

Understanding Misinformation vs. Disinformation

  • Misinformation: Unintentional spread of false or inaccurate information, often due to lack of knowledge or verification.
  • Disinformation: Deliberate dissemination of false information with the intent to deceive or manipulate.

Both can originate from various sources, including social media, news outlets, industry reports, and word of mouth. Motivations for disinformation range from financial gain to political influence, while misinformation often stems from misunderstanding or incomplete information.

Sources of Misinformation and Disinformation

  • Social Media: Rapid sharing without fact-checking can create false narratives about LCV safety, performance, and regulations. Misleading posts about diesel vs. electric vehicle environmental impact can skew public perception.
  • News Outlets: While reputable sources prioritize accuracy, sensationalism and oversimplification of complex issues (like emissions or Brexit) can spread misinformation.
  • Industry Reports: Misinterpreted or out-of-context data in industry publications can lead to confusion among stakeholders and impact market strategies.
  • Word of Mouth: Anecdotal evidence and online reviews, while valuable, can lack accuracy and lead to inaccurate generalizations.

Consequences of Misinformation and Disinformation

  • Consumer Behavior: False claims about reliability, maintenance costs, or safety can deter buyers or lead to poor choices. Exaggerated concerns about electric van maintenance costs can hinder adoption of greener technologies.
  • Regulatory Impact: Policymakers rely on accurate data. Misinformation can lead to ineffective regulations that don’t address market needs or environmental goals. Misconceptions about EV infrastructure feasibility can hinder support for charging networks.
  • Market Dynamics: Misinformation can distort stock prices, investment decisions, and competitive strategies. Companies may react to perceived trends based on false information, misallocating resources. Disinformation campaigns can unfairly damage brand reputations.

Case Studies

  • Electric Vehicles and Emissions: Misinformation about EV production’s environmental impact (compared to diesel) persists. While EV production has higher initial emissions, their lifetime emissions are significantly lower. Distorted information can create consumer reluctance.
  • Brexit and Trade Uncertainty: False information about tariffs, supply chain disruptions, and post-Brexit vehicle standards has created uncertainty for manufacturers and consumers, potentially delaying investments and complicating planning.

Mitigation Strategies

  • Fact-Checking and Verification: Encouraging rigorous fact-checking in media and industry publications can reduce misinformation. Fact-checking initiatives and partnerships with credible organizations can provide accurate information.
  • Public Awareness Campaigns: Educating the public about the risks and impact of misinformation is crucial. Campaigns can help consumers critically assess information and rely on verified sources.
  • Collaboration with Social Media Platforms: Working with platforms to identify and counteract false information through stricter content moderation and promotion of reliable sources.
  • Industry Transparency: Openly sharing accurate data on vehicle performance, environmental impact, and regulatory compliance builds trust and counters misinformation.

Conclusion

Misinformation and disinformation significantly impact the UK van and LCV market. Addressing this requires a concerted effort from industry, media, social media platforms, and policymakers to foster transparency, accuracy, and critical thinking for a more informed and resilient market.

LCV MARKET SEES THREE-YEAR HIGH

UK light commercial vehicle (LCV) registrations saw a 3% year-on-year increase in 2024, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), marking the strongest market performance in three years with a total of 351,834 units registered.

While electric LCV registrations also grew by 3.3%, their market share remained at 6.3%. This highlights the need for continued focus on EV adoption within the sector.

A significant driver of growth was the sub-2.0t van segment, which experienced a substantial 44.5% surge in registrations, reaching 8,606 units. The 2.0-2.5t segment also performed well with a 12.3% increase to 65,148 units, while the largest segment, 2.5-3.5t vans, saw a more modest 2.1% rise to 233,216 units.

However, not all segments experienced growth. Pick-up truck registrations declined by 8.3% to 37,582, a figure the SMMT predicts could fall further following upcoming tax changes. 4×4 registrations also decreased, falling by 9.7% to 7,282 units.

SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes emphasized the importance of the LCV sector as an indicator of the UK economy: “Vans, 4x4s and pick-ups keep businesses everywhere on the move, making this sector a barometer of the UK economy. The best overall volume in three years, therefore, is good news with van makers striving to deliver abundant and competitive EV choice.”

Hawes also stressed the critical need for improved charging infrastructure to support wider EV adoption within fleets: “Buyer confidence, however, will inevitably be undermined when charging infrastructure does not meet the needs of fleet operations. A review of EV regulation is crucial, therefore, to reflect current market realities and ensure ambitions are deliverable, without any negative and costly consequences.”

In contrast to the overall annual growth, December’s figures revealed an 8.3% year-on-year market decline. Despite a 13.6% increase in sub-2.0t van registrations, other segments experienced decreases: 2.0-2.5t vans were down 4.1%, 2.5-3.5t vans down 2.2%, pick-ups down 28.1%, and 4x4s down 54.4%.

HO-HO-HO! HAUL OUT THE HOLLY (AND YOUR HAULAGE!)

Well, folks, another year has almost vanished faster than a mince pie at the Trucksmith Christmas party (more on that later… maybe). It’s that time again when the jingle bells start ringing, the fairy lights get tangled, and we all try to remember where we stored the Christmas decorations (usually in the back of a van, if you’re anything like us).

Here at Trucksmith, we’re gearing up for a festive break, but before we hang up our wrenches and swap them for… well, more wrenches (we can’t help ourselves!), we wanted to send a massive Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all our fantastic customers.

This year has been another busy one. We’ve seen more miles clocked, more deliveries made, and more businesses kept moving, thanks to you. Whether you’re hauling presents for Santa, delivering turkeys for the big day, or just making sure the festive cheer gets where it needs to be, we’re proud to have been part of your journey.

We know the holidays can be a hectic time for everyone, especially those in the transport and logistics game. So, from all of us at Trucksmith, we hope you get a chance to put your feet up (preferably not on the dashboard!), enjoy some well-deserved rest, and spend quality time with loved ones.

Now, about that Christmas party… Let’s just say there was a spirited debate about whether reindeer or vans are more efficient for delivering presents (vans won, obviously). There may also have been some questionable karaoke and a slightly competitive game of ‘pin the tail on the Luton van’. What happens at the Trucksmith Christmas party, stays at the Trucksmith Christmas party… mostly.

As we look ahead to the New Year, we’re excited for what 2025 brings. We’re committed to continuing to provide you with top-quality vehicles, exceptional service, and maybe even a few more witty blog posts (if you’re lucky!).

So, from our family to yours, Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and a prosperous New Year! May your journeys be smooth, your deliveries on time, and your eggnog strong.

DROPSIDES V TIPPERS: THE ULTIMATE UTILITY TRUCK SHOWDOWN

When it comes to utility vehicles, the age-old debate of drop side versus tipper trucks often leaves buyers scratching their heads. But fret not, because we’re diving into the benefits of these two heavyweights to help you make the right choice for your needs. Spoiler alert: you can’t go wrong with either!

First up, let’s talk drop side trucks. Imagine a Swiss Army knife on wheels—this beauty is designed for versatility. With sides that drop down, loading and unloading becomes a breeze. Whether you’re hauling timber, transporting equipment, or just making a run to the local dump, the drop side design provides easy access from all angles. Plus, it’s a show-off at the job site, allowing for seamless loading that will have your crew singing your praises.

Now, let’s tip our hats to the tippers. These trucks are the superheroes of bulk transport. With the ability to unload their cargo with a simple flick of a switch, they save you time and effort, leaving you free to focus on what really matters—like planning your next coffee break. Ideal for construction sites and landscaping projects, tippers make quick work of gravel, sand, and other materials.

Both options offer unique advantages, but what truly sets them apart is their ability to adapt to your needs. Whether you need the accessibility of a drop side or the efficiency of a tipper, investing in one of these trucks is like adding a trusty sidekick to your workday.

So, why choose between convenience and efficiency? With a drop side or a tipper truck from Trucksmith, you get the best of both worlds. Make your investment count, and watch your productivity soar!

THE ELECTRIC REVOLUTION: SHOCKING CHANGES FOR THE LCV MARKET

Buckle up, folks! The electric vehicle (EV) revolution is rolling into the Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) market, and it’s sparking more than just a few debates. As we plug into this electrifying trend, it’s clear that the future of LCVs is charging ahead—leaving traditional vehicles in the dust (or should we say, emissions?).

First off, let’s talk about the elephant in the room: the environment. With growing awareness of climate change, businesses are looking for ways to reduce their carbon footprint. Enter electric LCVs, which promise zero tailpipe emissions and a greener planet. You can feel good about making deliveries while simultaneously giving Mother Nature a high-five. “Yes, I’ll take my coffee to go—with a side of sustainability, please!”

Then there’s the cost factor. While the upfront price tag for an electric LCV might make your wallet gasp, consider the savings on fuel and maintenance. Electric motors are less complex, which means fewer trips to the mechanic. That’s right—your van won’t just run silently; it’ll run reliably, giving you more time for, well, not fixing it!

And let’s not forget about the tech-savvy side of things. Electric LCVs come packed with smart technology, from real-time tracking to advanced safety features. It’s like having a co-pilot who never needs a coffee break. Imagine managing your fleet with just a few taps on your smartphone—no more messy paperwork or chasing down rogue drivers.

Of course, the transition won’t be without its bumps. Charging infrastructure is still catching up, and range anxiety is real. But as technology improves, we can expect an explosion of charging stations that will make “are we there yet?” a thing of the past.

So, whether you’re a fleet manager or a small business owner, the electric LCV wave is coming. Embrace the shock—it’s going to be a wild ride!

THE POWER OF RESPECT: DRIVING BETTER DESIGN AT TRUCKSMITH

In the fast-paced world of design and innovation, the importance of respect between colleagues cannot be overstated. At Trucksmith, we believe that a culture of respect not only fosters creativity and collaboration but also drives better design outcomes. This commitment to mutual respect has been instrumental in shaping our latest venture, the Trucksmith Target dropside and tipper, setting a new standard in the industry.

In the dynamic environment of a design studio, where ideas are born and concepts take shape, respect is the cornerstone of success. When team members value each other’s perspectives and contributions, magic happens. The exchange of ideas becomes a vibrant dialogue, where creativity thrives and innovation flourishes. At Trucksmith, we have seen firsthand how a culture of respect empowers our designers to push boundaries and think outside the box.

The Trucksmith Target dropside and tipper are a testament to the power of respect in design. Each team member brought their unique expertise to the table, knowing that their voice would be heard and valued. This sense of respect fueled our creativity and inspired us to create a vehicle that not only meets industry standards but sets a new benchmark for excellence.

One of the key ways in which respect drives better design is through open communication. When colleagues respect each other, they are more likely to listen actively, share ideas freely, and provide constructive feedback. This open dialogue is essential for refining concepts, addressing challenges, and ultimately delivering a product that exceeds expectations. In the case of the Trucksmith Target range, respect paved the way for transparent communication, enabling us to iterate quickly and make informed decisions at every stage of the design process.

Respect also plays a crucial role in fostering a positive work environment where team members feel valued and supported. When colleagues respect each other’s skills and contributions, trust is built, morale is high, and motivation soars. This positive energy is contagious and translates into a shared commitment to excellence. The success of the Trucksmith Target range is not just the result of individual efforts but of a cohesive team driven by respect and a common goal.

Furthermore, respect extends beyond the confines of the design studio and influences how we engage with our clients and partners. By prioritising respect in all our interactions, we build lasting relationships based on trust, integrity, and professionalism. This ethos has been instrumental in positioning Trucksmith as a trusted leader in the industry, known for delivering innovative solutions that exceed expectations.

In conclusion, the Trucksmith Target dropside and tipper are a shining example of how respect between colleagues drives better design outcomes. By fostering a culture of respect, we empower our team to collaborate effectively, communicate openly, and strive for excellence in everything we do. At Trucksmith, we believe that respect is not just a value but a driving force that propels us towards innovation, success, and a brighter future for the industry.

SPOTLIGHT ON THE TEAM THAT BUILD THE LOLOADER® – TYLOR

Trucksmith team member, Tylor, sits in the back of a LoLoader wearing his blue and yellow Trucksmith uniform.

A STANDOUT APPLICANT

The story of the Trucksmith® LoLoader® is a long one starting with the original design back in 1993.  Along the way the design and build has been influenced and developed by many people; these include customers, design engineers and the actual Trucksmith® team that work on the production line; one such team member is Tylor.

Tylor joined Trucksmith® a little over five years ago.  A keen footballer and Spurs fan, his links with Trucksmith® go further back than this.  Whilst he was still at school, Tylor’s older sister worked in the Trucksmith® Accounts Department, she approached Company Director, Emma Trebble, with a view to Trucksmith® sponsoring Tylor’s football kit at Willand Rovers FC;  “Trucksmith® has always been a family run business and naturally, family helps family, so we were more than happy to sponsor Tylor; it also meant that when he applied for a job with us I remembered him as being a dedicated lad who wrote very polite thank you letters.  It may sound trite but in the employment market, anything an applicant can do to stand out in a positive way is important.”

And apply for a job at Trucksmith® Tylor did, “I knew about Trucksmith® for two reasons really,” says Tylor, “First of all Jade had worked there and secondly because they’re known in the area for being a good employer and a company that is at the head of its field.  Everyone knows what a LoLoader® is and everyone knows that Trucksmith® invented them.  So when I finished my apprenticeship at Exeter College, it was the first place that I really wanted to work.”

“EVERYONE KNOWS WHAT A LOLOADER® IS”

Trucksmith team member Tylor seals up a wheelbox in a LoLoader

Tylor joined the team at Trucksmith® as a trainee, “When I first started the training to get me established was really good.  I’m quite a handy person so I was comfortable using air tools and different materials, I was trained and tested in lots of different areas so that at the end of my probation period I had a good idea of what was expected of me and my manager Wayne knew where I was best suited to work.”  Wayne agrees, “Tylor is a talented young man and that was apparent from the outset, he’s hardworking and a real team player, it means placing him in different areas of the Production Team has always been easy.”

Tylor feels that his greatest achievement in his career so far is how he has progressed; “There’s always room to grow here, if you work hard and apply yourself Trucksmith® will support you.  I’m a Journeyman now but am hoping to move up in the next round of grade rises.” that won’t be enough for ambitious Tylor, “Ultimately I want to be a Line Manager at Trucksmith®.  The management team here have always believed in me and wanted me to be the best version of myself I can be, so leading my own team at Trucksmith® would be an important goal I’d like to reach.  I want to buy my own house and settle down one day and for me I want to do that at Trucksmith®.”

“IT’S QUALITY WORKMANSHIP THAT MAKES A QUALITY PRODUCT”

Reflecting on what he is most proud of when it comes to LoLoader® production Tylor continues, “We all take pride in our work producing the LoLoader® at Trucksmith®.  There’s a lot of thought that’s gone into how it’s built and how it can benefit our customers.  It’s quality workmanship that makes a quality product.  The guys here are top rate, you can’t fault us as a team, everyone wants to produce the best work they can because we’re all proud to be part of Trucksmith® and to build the LoLoader®.”

“TRUCKSMITH® CHANGED HOW THE ROADS OF BRITAIN LOOK WITH THE LOLOADER®”

And what about the prolific numbers of LoLoader® bodies you see on the road? “When you think about it Trucksmith® changed how the roads of Britain look with the LoLoader®.  You cannot go anywhere without seeing a Trucksmith® LoLoader®, they’re everywhere.  It makes me proud to be part of that story, you see one and you go ‘LoLoader®’, we all do it.  What’s great is when you see a really old one on the motorway still going strong, there’s that history and again it’s that quality of workmanship, it’s one of the reasons our customers come back for more and one of the reasons we’ve been voted What Van? Magazine’s Converter of the Year two years running.”

LOLOADER® PRODUCTION AT AN ALL TIME HIGH

Trucksmith® are delighted to announce that 700 LoLoader® bodies rolled off the Devon based production line during 2017, surpassing all previous production records.

The Trucksmith® LoLoader® was originally designed over twenty years ago by Trucksmith® founder Brian Trebble and his team of coachbuilders.

Speaking from the Design & Development office located in a converted Double Decker bus at the Uffculme site, Brian explained, “The original idea behind our design was to combat the historic issues of poor aerodynamics and handling associated with Luton vans.  We developed the stylish, high volume, low floored vehicle using innovative manufacturing methods to achieve an outstanding payload that has become the hallmark of all Trucksmith® vehicles.”

PIONEERING DESIGN

The Trucksmith® LoLoader® features a 450mm loading height – the lowest in its category – eliminating the need for a heavy tail lift. Trucksmith® also builds the body using aluminium as standard rather than composites, which significantly reduces body weight, is stronger and increases payload.

QUALITY PRODUCTION, QUALITY VALUES

Daniel Trebble, who became Managing Director of Trucksmith® in 2007, commented, “This significant milestone in the history of the Trucksmith® LoLoader® demonstrates our continuing popularity within the UK van market.  Quality is at the heart of everything we do, be it in customer service, the supply chain or employing Six Sigma values in our production system.

The company’s innovative approach has led to Trucksmith® becoming the first port of call for customers nationwide looking for unique designs, premium commercial vehicle bodies and the building of small and large fleets.

Daniel Trebble, Managing Director at Trucksmith, added, “Peter brings a great deal of experience and strength to the sales team at Trucksmith after years in the industry as an LCV Specialist.  We have worked with Peter a great deal over the years and are pleased to have a new face on board that shares our value for customer service and the LoLoader® van.  Here at Trucksmith we are focused on service as a business and Peter’s ability to form strong relationships at the highest level will play a key part in our client strategy.”
