FORGET THE GLOOM AND DOOM: WHY THE FUTURE OF THE UK LCV MARKET IS ACTUALLY QUITE SUNNY

Forget the Gloom and Doom: Why the Future of the UK LCV Market is Actually Quite Sunny

The news is full of doom and gloom. Brexit, inflation, the weather… it’s enough to make even the most hardened haulier weep into their thermos of lukewarm tea. But fear not, fellow road warriors! While challenges certainly exist, the future of the UK LCV market is actually quite sunny.

1. The Electric Revolution is Here (and it’s actually pretty cool):

Let’s be honest, electric vehicles were once the butt of many a trucker joke. Range anxiety? Charging times? What were those crazy eco-warriors thinking? But the technology has come a long way, baby. Today, we have powerful, long-range electric vans that can tackle even the most demanding routes. And with charging infrastructure rapidly expanding, range anxiety is becoming a thing of the past.

2. Innovation is Driving Efficiency (and Cutting Costs):

From telematics systems that optimize routes and reduce fuel consumption to advanced driver-assistance systems that improve safety and efficiency, technology is revolutionizing the LCV sector. This not only makes life easier for drivers but also helps businesses reduce costs and improve their bottom line.

3. The UK is a Hotbed of Entrepreneurial Activity:

Despite the challenges, the UK remains a hotbed of entrepreneurial activity. New businesses are constantly popping up, and many of them rely on LCVs for deliveries, transportation, and other essential services. This burgeoning entrepreneurial spirit provides a strong foundation for continued growth in the LCV market.

4. Sustainability is Sexy (and Good for Business):

Sustainability is no longer just a buzzword; it’s a key consideration for businesses and consumers alike. By embracing electric vehicles and implementing eco-friendly practices, LCV operators can not only reduce their environmental impact but also enhance their brand image and attract environmentally conscious customers.

5. The British Spirit Will Always Endure:

Let’s not forget the most important factor: the indomitable spirit of the British people. We’ve faced challenges before and come out stronger. With a bit of ingenuity, resilience, and a healthy dose of humour, the UK LCV market will continue to thrive.

So, there you have it. The future of the UK LCV market may not be without its challenges, but it’s far from bleak. Embrace the changes, embrace the technology, and keep on trucking!

FROM TALC TO HANNOVER: TOBY’S IMPACT ON TRUCKSMITH’S DESIGNS

Most commercial vehicle converters simply adapt existing designs. At Trucksmith, we innovate. Our extensive R&D department is the driving force behind our industry-leading designs, including the original Trucksmith LoLoader. This commitment to research and development means you get vehicles that are not just different but demonstrably better.

Toby is a Junior Design Engineer at Trucksmith.  Since joining Trucksmith 18 months ago, Toby has become an integral part of our Quality and Product Design team. His dedication to excellence and proactive approach have led to tangible improvements across our product range. This dedication was further recognised with a trip to the prestigious IAA TRANSPORTATION show in Hannover, accompanying the senior management team.

MEET TOBY!

What does a typical day/week look like for you as a Junior Design Engineer?

No two weeks are the same, I am fortunate to have some key tasks like using SolidWorks to implement continuous improvement on the workshop floor; the department has a lot of scope and I enjoy a varied role.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of your role?

The variety of problems we get to deal with on the workshop floor is actually a huge driver for continuous improvement. Each new challenge, whether it’s a unique vehicle modification, a complex repair, or a process bottleneck, presents a learning opportunity. By analysing these problems, identifying root causes and implementing solutions, we constantly refine our processes and improve our efficiency. We’re not just designing and building vehicles; we’re constantly learning and improving how we work.

What skills are most important for success in your role?

Attention to detail is absolutely crucial in this role. Even small errors in design or execution can have significant consequences in a vehicle conversion. We’re dealing with precise measurements, complex systems, and strict safety regulations. A keen eye for detail ensures accuracy in everything from initial designs and calculations to final assembly and quality checks. This prevents costly mistakes, ensures the safety and reliability of our vehicles, and ultimately delivers a better product to our customers.

What are you learning in this role?

I’m gaining valuable experience in process engineering, which involves analysing and optimising our workshop workflows and manufacturing processes. This includes learning about lean manufacturing principles, identifying bottlenecks, and implementing changes to improve efficiency, reduce waste and enhance quality. I’m learning how to document processes, create flowcharts, and use data to measure the effectiveness of improvements

What are your short-term and long-term career goals within design engineering/the company?

In the short term, my goal is to solidify my skills and become a highly proficient and reliable member of the engineering team. I want to contribute to building a strong and stable team environment where we can effectively collaborate and share knowledge. I’m also eager to expand my experience with different design solutions and contribute to increasing our capacity for innovation. Long term, I see myself taking on more responsibility within the team, perhaps specialising in a particular area of design and playing a key role in developing cutting-edge solutions for Trucksmith

What’s a recent accomplishment you’re proud of?

I recently faced a challenge when trying to scan a vehicle bulkhead. The glossy surface was causing significant reflection, making it impossible to get a clean scan. The standard solution would have been to use a specialised anti-glare spray, which costs over £30 a can. However, I decided to explore alternative solutions. I remembered that talc powder can sometimes reduce shine, so I picked up a £3 tub from a local shop. It worked perfectly! I was able to get a high-quality scan without the expensive spray, saving the company money and demonstrating a bit of resourcefulness.

What sparked your interest in design engineering?

I’ve always been fascinated by product design. Even as a kid, I was taking things apart to see how they worked and trying to build my own creations. That interest led me to pursue design and technology at GCSE level and then onto a degree in product design. It’s not just something I do at work, either; in my free time, I enjoy more artistic pursuits like, which I think complements my technical design skills.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

Outside of work, I’m pretty active. I love playing various sports, but snowboarding is definitely a passion of mine – there’s nothing like carving down a mountain! I also train in Muay Thai, which is a great way to stay fit and focused. It’s challenging but incredibly rewarding. And even in my free time, I find myself drawn to design. I enjoy working on personal projects with 3D printing and rendering models – it’s a great way to explore new ideas and keep my creative juices flowing.

What’s a fun fact about yourself that most people don’t know?

I share the same birthday as my dad, Martin. It’s quite a coincidence – I was actually born on his 30th birthday, so I guess you could say I was his big 3-0 present!

If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?

If I could have any superpower, it would definitely be super intelligence. Not just knowing a lot of facts, but the ability to process information incredibly quickly, see connections others might miss, and come up with innovative solutions to complex problems. I think it would be fascinating to be able to tackle engineering challenges with that level of cognitive power, designing more efficient vehicles, developing sustainable technologies, and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.

Toby’s dedication to problem-solving, his resourcefulness, and his passion for design engineering make him a valuable asset to the Trucksmith team. His contributions, from workshop floor improvements to international industry exposure, embody our commitment to innovation and continuous development. We’re excited to see what he accomplishes in the future and how he continues to contribute to Trucksmith’s success in the commercial vehicle market.

TRUCKSMITH STANDS UP TO CANCER: A STORY OF STRENGTH AND SUPPORT

At Trucksmith, we’re more than just a team; we’re a family. And like any family, we support each other through thick and thin. That’s why we’re incredibly proud to share a story of resilience, determination, and the power of giving back.

In 2023, our Director, Emma, received a breast cancer diagnosis. This news understandably had a profound impact on everyone at Trucksmith. However, Emma faced her diagnosis with incredible strength and positivity. Following three surgeries and further treatment, we’re delighted to share that she has made a good recovery.

Inspired by her own experience and wanting to give back to the community that supported her, Emma set herself a challenge for April 2024: to walk five miles every single day with her loyal canine companion. Her goal? To raise vital funds for Stand Up To Cancer, a joint national fundraising campaign from Cancer Research UK and Channel 4, which funds vital research into new cancer treatments and tests.

Emma’s dedication was truly inspiring. Rain or shine, she laced up her walking boots and hit the pavement with her four-legged friend by her side. Her commitment not only showcased her personal strength but also rallied the entire Trucksmith team behind her.

And we didn’t just cheer from the sidelines. Recognizing the importance of Emma’s efforts and the incredible work of Stand Up To Cancer, Trucksmith pledged to match every pound she raised.

Thanks to Emma’s incredible effort and the generosity of her supporters, she raised an astounding £3,000! And with Trucksmith’s matching contribution, a total of £6,000 was donated to Stand Up To Cancer.

This significant donation will directly contribute to funding life-saving research, bringing us closer to a world where everyone survives cancer.

We’re immensely proud of Emma’s courage and determination. Her story is a powerful reminder of the importance of supporting one another and the positive impact we can have when we come together.

At Trucksmith, we believe in supporting our community and making a difference. Emma’s fundraising efforts perfectly embody this value, and we’re honoured to have been a part of her journey.

THE IMPACT OF MISINFORMATION ON THE UK VAN AND LCV MARKET

The UK’s van and light commercial vehicle (LCV) market is vital to the economy, supporting diverse sectors. However, misinformation and disinformation pose a growing threat, impacting consumer behavior, regulations, and market dynamics. This article explores these effects, examining the sources, consequences, and potential solutions.

Understanding Misinformation vs. Disinformation

  • Misinformation: Unintentional spread of false or inaccurate information, often due to lack of knowledge or verification.
  • Disinformation: Deliberate dissemination of false information with the intent to deceive or manipulate.

Both can originate from various sources, including social media, news outlets, industry reports, and word of mouth. Motivations for disinformation range from financial gain to political influence, while misinformation often stems from misunderstanding or incomplete information.

Sources of Misinformation and Disinformation

  • Social Media: Rapid sharing without fact-checking can create false narratives about LCV safety, performance, and regulations. Misleading posts about diesel vs. electric vehicle environmental impact can skew public perception.
  • News Outlets: While reputable sources prioritize accuracy, sensationalism and oversimplification of complex issues (like emissions or Brexit) can spread misinformation.
  • Industry Reports: Misinterpreted or out-of-context data in industry publications can lead to confusion among stakeholders and impact market strategies.
  • Word of Mouth: Anecdotal evidence and online reviews, while valuable, can lack accuracy and lead to inaccurate generalizations.

Consequences of Misinformation and Disinformation

  • Consumer Behavior: False claims about reliability, maintenance costs, or safety can deter buyers or lead to poor choices. Exaggerated concerns about electric van maintenance costs can hinder adoption of greener technologies.
  • Regulatory Impact: Policymakers rely on accurate data. Misinformation can lead to ineffective regulations that don’t address market needs or environmental goals. Misconceptions about EV infrastructure feasibility can hinder support for charging networks.
  • Market Dynamics: Misinformation can distort stock prices, investment decisions, and competitive strategies. Companies may react to perceived trends based on false information, misallocating resources. Disinformation campaigns can unfairly damage brand reputations.

Case Studies

  • Electric Vehicles and Emissions: Misinformation about EV production’s environmental impact (compared to diesel) persists. While EV production has higher initial emissions, their lifetime emissions are significantly lower. Distorted information can create consumer reluctance.
  • Brexit and Trade Uncertainty: False information about tariffs, supply chain disruptions, and post-Brexit vehicle standards has created uncertainty for manufacturers and consumers, potentially delaying investments and complicating planning.

Mitigation Strategies

  • Fact-Checking and Verification: Encouraging rigorous fact-checking in media and industry publications can reduce misinformation. Fact-checking initiatives and partnerships with credible organizations can provide accurate information.
  • Public Awareness Campaigns: Educating the public about the risks and impact of misinformation is crucial. Campaigns can help consumers critically assess information and rely on verified sources.
  • Collaboration with Social Media Platforms: Working with platforms to identify and counteract false information through stricter content moderation and promotion of reliable sources.
  • Industry Transparency: Openly sharing accurate data on vehicle performance, environmental impact, and regulatory compliance builds trust and counters misinformation.

Conclusion

Misinformation and disinformation significantly impact the UK van and LCV market. Addressing this requires a concerted effort from industry, media, social media platforms, and policymakers to foster transparency, accuracy, and critical thinking for a more informed and resilient market.

LCV MARKET SEES THREE-YEAR HIGH

UK light commercial vehicle (LCV) registrations saw a 3% year-on-year increase in 2024, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), marking the strongest market performance in three years with a total of 351,834 units registered.

While electric LCV registrations also grew by 3.3%, their market share remained at 6.3%. This highlights the need for continued focus on EV adoption within the sector.

A significant driver of growth was the sub-2.0t van segment, which experienced a substantial 44.5% surge in registrations, reaching 8,606 units. The 2.0-2.5t segment also performed well with a 12.3% increase to 65,148 units, while the largest segment, 2.5-3.5t vans, saw a more modest 2.1% rise to 233,216 units.

However, not all segments experienced growth. Pick-up truck registrations declined by 8.3% to 37,582, a figure the SMMT predicts could fall further following upcoming tax changes. 4×4 registrations also decreased, falling by 9.7% to 7,282 units.

SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes emphasized the importance of the LCV sector as an indicator of the UK economy: “Vans, 4x4s and pick-ups keep businesses everywhere on the move, making this sector a barometer of the UK economy. The best overall volume in three years, therefore, is good news with van makers striving to deliver abundant and competitive EV choice.”

Hawes also stressed the critical need for improved charging infrastructure to support wider EV adoption within fleets: “Buyer confidence, however, will inevitably be undermined when charging infrastructure does not meet the needs of fleet operations. A review of EV regulation is crucial, therefore, to reflect current market realities and ensure ambitions are deliverable, without any negative and costly consequences.”

In contrast to the overall annual growth, December’s figures revealed an 8.3% year-on-year market decline. Despite a 13.6% increase in sub-2.0t van registrations, other segments experienced decreases: 2.0-2.5t vans were down 4.1%, 2.5-3.5t vans down 2.2%, pick-ups down 28.1%, and 4x4s down 54.4%.

TRUCKSMITH HELPS TOOGOODTOWASTE TO MAKE A BIGGER IMPACT

At Trucksmith, we’re passionate about building vehicles that make a difference. That’s why we were thrilled to partner with TooGoodToWaste, a leading reuse charity in South Wales.

TooGoodToWaste collects unwanted household items from individuals and organisations, preventing them from ending up in landfill. They then clean and refurbish these items and offer them for resale at affordable prices to the local community.

HO-HO-HO! HAUL OUT THE HOLLY (AND YOUR HAULAGE!)

Well, folks, another year has almost vanished faster than a mince pie at the Trucksmith Christmas party (more on that later… maybe). It’s that time again when the jingle bells start ringing, the fairy lights get tangled, and we all try to remember where we stored the Christmas decorations (usually in the back of a van, if you’re anything like us).

Here at Trucksmith, we’re gearing up for a festive break, but before we hang up our wrenches and swap them for… well, more wrenches (we can’t help ourselves!), we wanted to send a massive Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all our fantastic customers.

This year has been another busy one. We’ve seen more miles clocked, more deliveries made, and more businesses kept moving, thanks to you. Whether you’re hauling presents for Santa, delivering turkeys for the big day, or just making sure the festive cheer gets where it needs to be, we’re proud to have been part of your journey.

We know the holidays can be a hectic time for everyone, especially those in the transport and logistics game. So, from all of us at Trucksmith, we hope you get a chance to put your feet up (preferably not on the dashboard!), enjoy some well-deserved rest, and spend quality time with loved ones.

Now, about that Christmas party… Let’s just say there was a spirited debate about whether reindeer or vans are more efficient for delivering presents (vans won, obviously). There may also have been some questionable karaoke and a slightly competitive game of ‘pin the tail on the Luton van’. What happens at the Trucksmith Christmas party, stays at the Trucksmith Christmas party… mostly.

As we look ahead to the New Year, we’re excited for what 2025 brings. We’re committed to continuing to provide you with top-quality vehicles, exceptional service, and maybe even a few more witty blog posts (if you’re lucky!).

So, from our family to yours, Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and a prosperous New Year! May your journeys be smooth, your deliveries on time, and your eggnog strong.

See you in 2025! (We’re back in on 2nd January)

The Trucksmith Team

P.S. If you happen to see Santa driving a suspiciously well-maintained Luton van this year, you’ll know who to thank. 😉

RECORD YEAR OF PRODUCTION FOR TRUCKSMITH

Trucksmith production employee at work

LOLOADER® PRODUCTION AT AN ALL TIME HIGH

Trucksmith® are delighted to announce that 700 LoLoader® bodies rolled off the Devon based production line during 2017, surpassing all previous production records.

The Trucksmith® LoLoader® was originally designed over twenty years ago by Trucksmith® founder Brian Trebble and his team of coachbuilders.

Speaking from the Design & Development office located in a converted Double Decker bus at the Uffculme site, Brian explained, “The original idea behind our design was to combat the historic issues of poor aerodynamics and handling associated with Luton vans.  We developed the stylish, high volume, low floored vehicle using innovative manufacturing methods to achieve an outstanding payload that has become the hallmark of all Trucksmith® vehicles.”

PIONEERING DESIGN

The Trucksmith® LoLoader® features a 450mm loading height – the lowest in its category – eliminating the need for a heavy tail lift. Trucksmith® also builds the body using aluminium as standard rather than composites, which significantly reduces body weight, is stronger and increases payload.

QUALITY PRODUCTION, QUALITY VALUES

Daniel Trebble, who became Managing Director of Trucksmith® in 2007, commented, “This significant milestone in the history of the Trucksmith® LoLoader® demonstrates our continuing popularity within the UK van market.  Quality is at the heart of everything we do, be it in customer service, the supply chain or employing Six Sigma values in our production system.

The company’s innovative approach has led to Trucksmith® becoming the first port of call for customers nationwide looking for unique designs, premium commercial vehicle bodies and the building of small and large fleets.

AWARD WINNING

Trucksmith rises to the challenge for Paul Rhodes Bakery LCV fleet

bakery van converter

Trucksmith has announced the sale of eight Renault Master LoLoader® vehicles to Paul Rhodes Bakery in London.

The Devon-based manufacturer was approached to create a bespoke version of its leading low-loading Luton that would increase the bakery’s delivery capacity and be nimble in the city.

Former Michelin-starred chef Paul Rhodes established the growing bakery business in 2003 and it is now one of London’s leading independent bakeries, supplying major hotels, restaurants, bars and delis throughout the capital, along with key events such as Wimbledon.

Paul Rhodes said: “We have a number of crucial requirements from our vans. We wanted a box van the width of a Mercedes Sprinter for ease of driving and to minimise potential damage from London’s narrow and busy roads.

“We also wanted a vehicle that would take the strain away from our drivers, and the low loading height is perfect for what we’re doing. We have also designed shelving and boxes that run on the floor to maximise load yet carefully handle the delicate products we produce.

“The result is that we can get an extra 90 boxes in the LoLoader® through its design, making deliveries more efficient – and the vans look great too.”

Trucksmith, which recently won the 2017 What Van? Converter of the Year award, customer built the vans with a reduced width compared to the normal LoLoader® specification. The design overcomes the historic issues of poor aerodynamics and handling associated with Luton vans, using innovative manufacturing methods to achieve an outstanding payload that has become the hallmark of all Trucksmith vehicles.

Simon Partridge, Executive Sales and Brand Manager at Trucksmith, said: “We have been converting vehicles for over 30 years, and while every custom build has its challenges, we’re delighted that the finished result offers such advantages for the Paul Rhodes Bakery fleet.”

Trucksmith builds the LoLoader® body on the Renault Master platform cab, and is a converter partner for Renault. Trucksmith also creates other manufacturer-approved low-loading Lutons, including the Vauxhall Movano KneeHi® and Fiat Ducato Canniloader®.

Trucksmith strengthens sales team with new field sales appointment

Trucksmith has announced the appointment of Martin Hargreaves to the South West field sales team at its Devon headquarters.
The award-winning van converter has seen double digit revenue growth in the past 12 months and the role will broaden the capabilities of its developing sales team.

Martin joins as Territory Field Sales Executive, and brings 11 years of experience with him in sales in the South West. He was formerly in sales management at retailer CarphoneWarehouse, running stores in locations such as Exeter and Barnstaple.

He said: “My experience in building and managing customer relationships will come to the fore in this role, since Trucksmith has the ability to tailor van conversions to any number of customer uses – from bread vans and delivery vehicles to showrooms and mobile libraries.
“I’ll be focusing on maintaining an unbeatable support network for our wide-ranging customers, including the Renault, Vauxhall and Fiat dealerships where our vehicles are available.”

The role at a commercial body builder like Trucksmith is particularly appropriate since Martin enjoys body building of a different kind – training as an amateur strongman in regional competitions.

Daniel Trebble, Managing Director at Trucksmith, said: “This is an exciting period for Trucksmith, with several new product launches this year, and Martin’s skills will be hugely valuable. We are focused on service as a business and his ability to form strong relationships at the highest level will play a key part in our client strategy.”

Trucksmith was recently voted Van Converter of the Year 2017 by readers of What Van? Magazine, and launched its new Renault Trafic Target dropside at the Commercial Vehicle Show in April 2017.

Trucksmith invests £1m in new laser technology

Award-winning van converter Trucksmith has literally put cutting-edge technology at the heart of its production process.

The Devon-based manufacturer has invested £1m in the latest metal cutting fibre laser technology from Amada. The equipment has enabled Trucksmith to automate production of sheet metal components for their market-leading low-loading Luton vans – which include the Renault Master LoLoader®, Vauxhall Movano KneeHi® and Fiat Ducato Canniloader®.

Daniel Trebble, Managing Director at the pioneering family-run business, said: “We have been innovating for more than two decades, and as technology has improved we have been first to embrace it. Fibre laser is a great example of how we can produce highly accurate components – even through the night using a fully automated cutting schedule– to enable our skilled people to build vehicles more efficiently.

“The technology we’ve chosen is not only more productive but also energy efficient, since it enables 2kW of laser power to profile steel components that would previously have required a 4kW laser. This new capability has been integral in our development of a brand-new dropside van we’re launching at the Commercial Vehicle Show in Birmingham later this month – the Renault Trafic Target.”
The Amada laser technology can cut through 25mm sheet steel, has continuous variable beam control across every thickness of material and a cutting speed of over 4700 ipm.

Trucksmith has also installed an Amada ASLUL fully automated loading system for the laser cutter, capable of storing and auto-loading up to nine tonnes of raw sheet metal and processed components. The system also includes an Amada press brake with 3D touch screen control panel to enable manual finishing of components.

Trucksmith was recently voted Van Converter of the Year 2017 by readers of What Van? Magazine, and as well as the new Renault Trafic Target is set to launch a low-loading Nissan Luton in the summer.

Trucksmith launches Renault Trafic Target to trades sector

Trucksmith, an approved converter partner of Renault UK vans, has launched a new product at this year’s Commercial Vehicle Show at the NEC.

The Target is based on the low roof Renault Trafic platform cab and introduces a clever secure loading space to the traditional dropside flatbed van. As you may expect from Trucksmith, What Van’s Converter of the Year 2017, the new vehicle is robust, practical and cleverly designed to meet the needs of tradesmen such as builders and gardeners, as well as council maintenance teams.

The upper loading area has 400mm high folding and removable aluminium panels with a 2850 x 1890mm top deck. The unique difference is the hidden lower desk where there is a secure and weather-proof load space accessible via a rear tailgate.

The fixed space is 1260 wide and 505mm deep, and designed to hold stacked standard 8 x 4’ sheets of material or bulky tools such as strimmers, keeping them secure and out of site.

The superstructure and load bed subframe are from pressed and welded steel, hot dip galvanized then bonded and mechanically fixed to the vehicle floor pan to form a one-piece monocoque structure. The top desk flooringis resin coated 12mm mesh-faced birch plywood.

With all the features you’d expect from the Renault Trafic, the Trucksmith vehicle will match Renault’s 4 year, 100,000 mile warranty.

Trucksmith wins Van Converter of the Year 2017

what van award 2017

Readers of leading transport industry magazine What Van? have voted Trucksmith as Van Converter of the Year 2017.

Trucksmith was announced as the winner at an awards presentation in London in December 2016 attended by many of the major names in van production.

The company fought off stiff competition from 14 other vehicle converters to scoop the prestigious award.

Announcing the award, What Van? said: “Following its successful and popular debut in 2015, we have continued our reader-voted accolade for the third time. We asked readers to choose the best light commercial vehicle body builder or racking specialist from a 15-strong shortlist compiled by our expert panel.

“It is not difficult to understand why our readers voted for Trucksmith. The company has found a way around the traditional drawbacks of Luton vans, such as poor aerodynamics, high floors, and poor handling due to the high centre of gravity.”

Daniel Trebble, Managing Director at Trucksmith, said: “Thousands of our vans are now on the UK’s roads, and the public now recognises Trucksmith brands such as Renault Master LoLoader and Vauxhall Movano KneeHi.

“To think that they’ve voted for us over some worthy competition makes us incredibly proud and is an exceptional achievement for our business. It reflects our focus on innovation and quality, and our investment in state-of-the-art production facilities and well trained staff has been key to our success.”

Trucksmith pioneered the low-loading Luton van model and is an approved body builder for leading van marques including Renault, Vauxhall and Fiat.

White & Company expands its Trucksmith fleet of low loading LCVs

White & Company vans sold by Trucksmith

August 10th 2016, Devon – Trucksmith has announced the sale of 14 of its Vauxhall Movano KneeHi® vehicles to nationwide removals firm, White & Company.

The Trucksmith KneeHi® is a Vauxhall-approved conversion based on the Vauxhall Movano platform cab. It overcomes the historic issues of poor aerodynamics and handling associated with Luton vans, using innovative manufacturing methods to achieve an outstanding payload that has become the hallmark of all Trucksmith vehicles.

Ian Palmer, CEO at White & Company, said: “The Trucksmith KneeHi® will enhance our ability to provide a fast, efficient and competitive removals and storage service. We initially ordered two and put them through their paces, and saw the advantages in terms of loading height and payload immediately. We’ve taken delivery of an additional six vehicles in our fleet with an order for eight more in 2017.

“We now have a fleet of more than 200 vehicles, from LCVs to artics, and the Trucksmith KneeHi® fleet broadens our capabilities, in particular making us more nimble in cities and in areas with poor accessibility.”

The Trucksmith KneeHi® loading height of 550mm (450mm if air suspension is specified) is the lowest in its category, eliminating the need for a heavy tail lift. It offers a payload of 1,300kg, with fuel, the spare wheel and toolkit taken into account. Fuel consumption averages at 27mpg fully laden but can be significantly more on a run. Trucksmith builds the body using aluminium as standard rather than composites, which significantly reduces body weight, is stronger and increases payload.

Daniel Trebble, Managing Director at Trucksmith, said: “We are proud to be contributing to the continued success of White & Company. Their faith in our conversions demonstrates the increasing popularity of our low-loading concept within the UK removals market.

“We are able to undertake these conversions and any other specialist requirements within our own production facility that is Vauxhall accredited, and all our vehicles carry EWVTA and match the manufacturer’s warranty. We find the 3.5 tonne configuration popular because drivers do not need to obtain a specialist operating licence.”

Further innovative features of the Trucksmith KneeHi® include double rear doors that open to 270 degrees, anti-slip plywood flooring, opalescent glass fibre roof panel to improve internal visibility and an interior lamp and strong steel bulkhead to provide additional cab security.
